Speaking and Writing

Pearson Test of English (PTE) is totally a computer-based test and even the marking is done by the computer. This test is designed in such a way - to assess the candidate’s English abilities that are planning to study or work in abroad. The best part of this test is – results can be achieved within 5 business days. Besides, test dates are available at any time. There are over 200 test centers across the globe.

Speaking section is designed in such a way; it assesses your English speaking ability skills in an academic environment. In writing section, you have to write the responses in academic English with proper grammar and spelling.

Part A: Personal introduction

There is no scoring for this item type. You will be given 25 seconds to prepare your response and 30 seconds to record your answer. You can record the answer only once.

Part B: Tasks to be Performed

  • Read Aloud - A text appears on screen. Read the text aloud
  • Repeat Sentence - After listening to a recording of a sentence, repeat the sentence
  • Describe Image - An image appears on screen. Describe the image in detail
  • Re-tell Lecture - After listening to or watching a lecture, re-tell the lecture in your own words
  • Answer short question - After listening to a question, answer with a single word or a few words
  • Summerize written text - After reading a text, write a one-sentence summary of the passage
  • Write Essay - Write a 200-300 word essay on a given topic

FAQ's

PTE scores are valid for 2 years from the date you appear for the exam. You can take the PTE test as many times as you can. But need to wait for the results of the previous test.

Reach the test center before 30 minutes so that you can avoid uncontrollable hurdles in between to reach the test station. Carry a valid passport which is not expired. To be on safe side, have an e-mail confirmation print out of the exam confirmation date.

PTE test will last for approximately 3 hours depending on the combination of the questions. This includes a 10 minutes break after the first two sections which are optional. It is better not to take the break. Any extra time taken beyond 10 minutes will be deducted in section 3.

The PTE General test has mainly two sections – a written paper and a spoken test. The written part is further divided into listening, reading comprehension and writing skills sections

Score Reporting

As PTE is a computer-based exam, the correction is done by the computer which is known as an automated scoring system. The quality of the answers given by the student will be checked through enabling skills. Two types of scoring appear in PTE exam – correct or incorrect and partial credit scoring.

Correct or incorrect:

If your response is correct you will receive 1 point if it is incorrect or not attempted you will not receive any score point for that question.

Partial credit scoring:

If your response is correct, you will receive maximum score points for each question. If your responses are partially correct, you will not receive full points but less than the maximum score points. Three item types in PTE is having partial credit score: Multiple – choice, choose multiple answers (Reading), Multiple – choice, choose multiple answers (Listening) and Highlight incorrect words (Listening).

PTE scores are totally based on the student’s performance on all item types. The overall score for PTE is based on 10 – 90 points.

Communicative skills:

Speaking and Writing, Reading and Listening are the communicative skills tested here. Each communicative skill will be given the points 10 – 90.

Enabling skills:

Grammar, Oral fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary and Written discourse are the enabling skills tested here. Each enabling skill will be given the points 10 – 90.

  • Aspirants’ planning to take PTE exam – minimum age requirement is 16 years.
  • Aspirants’ below 18 years need to submit a proof of parents consent.
  • Actually, there is no such specific PTE eligibility criterion.

Students who want to appear for the PTE exam first one have to visit www.pearsonpte.com and have to get register. They will send you a login id and password which helps you to complete the full procedure. You can book slot date as per your requirement by filling up all the details. Finally, you will receive an email confirmation with details of the test center location along with the directions to reach the test center.

Slot booking fee:

The standard test fee is Rs. 10255 + 18% GST

Late booking fee is Rs. 12819 + 18% GST

Requirements: Valid ID – Passport.


  • Do have a good night sleep the night before the exam date.
  • Be in the exam center before 30 minutes with a valid ID proof.
  • You will be provided with erasable note board booklet. So use it to take any notes if required for any question type.
  • Do check the headphones. Any problem with the headphones, let the member of the staff know beforehand so that you may not face the problem when you begin the test or in between the test. As the test time will not be paused because of these reasons.
  • Under any circumstances, if you face any software or hardware glitches, let the member of the staff know. They will resolve the issue.
  • Before you proceed to the next question, make sure the answer is right. Rest of them is wrong. Be careful with multiple choice, multiple answers (Reading), multiple choice, multiple answers (Listening) and High light incorrect words (Listening) as these three questions have partial credit.
  • Strictly follow the rules, regulations and the instructions. Any breach of these – you will be mentioned as “No Show”.
  • Don’t carry any personal items such as mobiles, pagers etc as these are not allowed inside the exam hall. If you still want to carry these – you can give them to one of the staff members to store in a safe place. But do collect all your belongings once you are done with the test.
  • If you remain silent for 3 seconds in speaking test – the microphone will close.
  • Don’t write everything in CAPITAL LETTERS. But do mention capital letters whenever it is needed.
  • Don’t click the previous button as you cannot navigate back to check the answers or attempt it later. Make sure you are confident with your answers before you hit the Next button.
